Doug and Melody Penney are excited about what God is doing in the lives of Taiwanese people. The Penneys have been working in Taiwan for more than 16 years, helping to establish new churches. The Peace Center Church in central Taiwan is their most recent endeavor. It has about 30 members who are all quite young in the Lord. Since there are universities nearby, many of the members are college students.
Life in Taiwan is comfortable, with a fairly high standard of living. This makes it a challenge to convince people of their need for a Savior. Working with a young Taiwanese couple, the Penneys have seen encouraging growth in their new church. As part of the church activities, they conduct various outreach efforts, such as evangelistic English classes, mother's classes, and night market evangelism. Sometimes Doug teaches missions at a local seminary and Melody has served on the missionary school board.
Doug and Melody first met in Taiwan, while they were both serving short-term. It was during college in California that Doug was first impressed with the need for service in overseas Christian mission. After graduation, he followed up on a commitment he had made by serving in Taiwan for two years. From early on, Melody had a lot of input from various missionaries who visited her church. She spent a summer in Taiwan during college and then later returned to teach 5th grade at Morrison Academy, where she met Doug. After they were married, Doug attended Western Seminary in Oregon to prepare for career missionary service in Taiwan.
