Advanced Bible and Theology Program

Advanced Bible and Theology Certificate Program

The Advanced Bible & Theology (ABT) Program is designed to give participants increased knowledge and understanding of basic Christian beliefs. Participants working toward the ABT Certificate will complete a series of six Bible and theology courses over a two-year time period, or longer, if necessary. Upon completion of the classes and the corresponding course work, graduates receive a certificate, as well as public recognition during a Wednesday evening program. Easy-to-understand notes and booklets will be provided in each class. Engaging discussions and PowerPoint presentations will make these classes interesting and informative.

Course Descriptions

The following courses may be taken in any order as there are no prerequisites. Anyone may attend these classes; however, those wishing to receive an ABT Certificate will be required to meet the following requirements:

  • Register in the ABT Certificate Program (See “Registration” below)
  • Attend at least 75% of the classes
  • Informal, self-graded quizzes may be given periodically

Old Testament Survey (Course No. 601)

This course is designed to give participants an understanding of the contemporary significance of the Old Testament, and its theological perspectives. The course will provide an overview of the Old Testament, by breaking it down into ten major periods. Topics include:

  • The Antediluvian Period
  • The Post-Flood Period
  • Patriarchal Period
  • The Wilderness Period
  • Conquest of the Promised Land
  • The Period of the Judges
  • The United Monarchy Period
  • The Divided Kingdom Period
  • The Exile Period
  • The Restoration Period

New Testament Survey (Course No. 602)

This course is designed to give participants an overview of the New Testament, including its major thematic elements, its major historical events, and how it was written for the instruction and encouragement. Topics include:

  • The Gospels
  • The Early Church
  • Paul’s Letters
  • The General Epistles
  • Revelation

How to Understand the Bible (Course No. 603)

This course shows participants how to get the most out of a Bible study by interpreting it properly. It addresses the various literary genres of the Bible, how to examine the context and exegete the author’s intended message. Topics include:

  • How to use the O-I-A Method of Bible study
  • How to make reading the Bible more interesting
  • How to make sure your understanding is correct
  • How to apply Bible principles to your everyday living
  • How to discover the author’s intended message

Christianity: Know What You Believe I (Course No. 604)

The objective of this course is to equip believers to know what they believe and why they believe it. Topics include:

  • Is the Bible truly God's Word?
  • What does the Bible say about God?
  • Who is Jesus?
  • Who is the Holy Spirit?

Christianity: Know What You Believe II (Course No. 605)

The course is a continuation of "Christianity: Know What You Believe I." Topics include:

  • What does it mean to be saved?
  • Why did God create man?
  • Do angels really exist?
  • What does the Bible say about the church?
  • What does the Bible say about the future?

Church Roots (Course No. 606)

This course presents a brief overview of the history of Christianity from Pentecost to the Reformation. Topics include:

  • How did the Church begin?
  • How did God sustain the church down through history?
  • What brought about the Reformation?
